The Metals Company (NASDAQ: TMC) is a unique deep-sea mining firm focused on collecting polymetallic nodules from the Pacific Ocean seafloor. These nodules contain nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese, which are essential critical metals for clean energy technologies and electric vehicle batteries. The Metals Company aims to become a key supplier for America's green power initiatives.

On August 27, 2026, analyst firm Stifel Nicolaus initiated coverage on The Metals Company with a "Buy" rating. The firm set a price target of $10.00 per share. With the stock trading at $5.09 at the time of the announcement, this new target represents a potential upside of approximately 96.5% for investors.

This positive outlook follows significant momentum for The Metals Company. As highlighted by Fool - Investing News, The Metals Company's stock has gained about 32% over the last month after a decent second quarter. The share price has been volatile, trading as high as $11.35 in the last year and currently sits around $5.09.

A key factor is The Metals Company's progress in obtaining regulatory approval, which is necessary to begin deep-sea mining and generating revenue. Its subsidiary, TMC USA, submitted a consolidated application to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for an exploration license and a commercial recovery permit, as reported by GlobeNewsWire.

The application covers an expanded area of 65,000 square kilometers, estimated to contain 619 million tonnes of wet nodules. NOAA has already completed compliance determinations for the application. While certification is now expected in October 2026 due to administrative delays, the application itself is progressing through key milestones.
