• Despite challenges, the global mining giant maintains a substantial market capitalization of $221.42 billion, focusing on essential resources like iron ore, copper, and coal.
• A surging copper market, driven by new trade policies and strong demand from the artificial intelligence industry, presents a significant positive catalyst for BHP's future performance.

BHP (NYSE: BHP) is a major global mining company operating in the basic materials sector. The company focuses on producing essential resources like iron ore, copper, and coal. With a large market capitalization of approximately $221.42 billion, BHP stands as one of the industry's largest companies.

On September 10, 2026, the analyst firm Citigroup (NYSE: C) updated its rating on BHP, assigning it a "Neutral" grade with a "hold" action. This type of rating suggests that analysts believe the stock is likely to perform in line with the market. The stock price was $87.18 when the rating was issued.

This cautious outlook may be influenced by recent labor issues. As highlighted by Reuters, an Australian mining union is funding a class-action lawsuit against BHP. This legal action could potentially involve up to 7,000 workers, creating legal and financial uncertainty for the company.

Furthering these concerns, negotiations between BHP and unions at its Port Hedland iron ore operations concluded without a deal, as also reported by Reuters. These ongoing disputes present a risk to the company's operational stability, which likely contributes to the neutral analyst rating.

However, there are positive factors supporting the company. The copper market is seeing a significant surge, a positive development for BHP. MarketBeat's analysis shows Comex copper reached a new high above $6.72 per pound, driven by new trade policies and strong demand from the artificial intelligence industry.
